Health Surveillance is the control and management of potential risks and hazards of particular types of work in which employees may be at risk. It is about putting in place 'systematic, regular and appropriate procedures to detect early signs of work-related ill health among employees exposed to certain health risks - and acting on the results'.

With health surveillance it is the duty of the employer to make a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to workers exposed to substances hazardous to health with a view to controlling these substances.

Failure to do so could lead to:-

  • Financial compensation to the employees
  • The closure of the process involving the hazardous substance
  • The cost of control measures
  • The cost of maintenance
  • The cost of regular monitoring of the hazards
  • The cost of regular surveillance
